Have a Question?OVERWHELMING RENDERING PERFORMANCE FOR BOTH STILLS AND MOVIES THAT FULLY DESERVES THE S-LINE DESIGNATION
Various lens elements that offer superior optical performance to realize high aberration-correction performance are generously incorporated. As a result, outstandingly sharp resolution is achieved even in the peripheral areas of the frame at the maximum aperture across the entire shooting range from close distances to infinity. In shooting wildlife, landscapes, portraits and sports scenes, even details of distant subjects can be accurately rendered, and the sharply focused main subject can be impressively emphasized utilizing the large bokeh delivered with f/2.8 aperture.
EXTREMELY HIGH RESOLUTION AT ALL ZOOM POSITIONS
In the optical system, various lenses that deliver high optical performance such as a newly developed SR lens element, 1 fluorite lens element, 6 ED glass elements and two aspherical lens elements are incorporated. Via the adoption of a multi-focusing system, optical performance at short distances is greatly enhanced. With this system, sharp images without color bleeding can be reproduced at the focal plane regardless of shooting distance and subject, providing extremely high resolution.
SR lens (SR: Short-wavelength Refractive): Nikon’s original SR lens is a high- and specialized-dispersion glass featuring characteristics to greatly refract light with wavelengths shorter than that of blue. By controlling short-wavelength light that is difficult to compensate, highly precise chromatic aberration compensation is achieved. With this AF drive system, because multiple lens focus groups are driven by multiple AF actuators, the position of the lens focus groups is precisely controlled. Even when shooting subjects at close distances, that is likely to produce aberrations, high-resolution images with intensively compensated aberrations can be obtained.
Despite being a telephoto zoom lens, the minimum focus distance of 0.5 m at the wide-angle end, the shortest in its class, (1.0 m at the telephoto end) is realized via the adoption of the multi-focusing system. Because you can boldly approach subjects to take high-quality images, image expression utilizing natural bokeh and closeup shots including tabletop photography can be easily enjoyed.
The optical VR function provides a superior compensation effect equivalent to shooting at a shutter speed 5.5 stops faster, the maximum in the history of NIKKOR interchangeable lenses. Reliable picture-taking is ensured even in telephoto shooting or in low-light shooting that is likely to produce image blur caused by camera shake.
EXCELLENT TOLERANCE FOR BACKLIGHT
Both Nano Crystal Coat and ARNEO Coat, Nikon’s original high-performance anti-reflection coating systems, are employed. Ghost and flare effects caused by incident light from any direction are effectively reduced. This enables the capture of clear and crisp images even when a light source is located within the frame.
SUPERB MOVIE RECORDING PERFORMANCE WITH ENHANCED USABILITY
Superior operability has been pursued not only for still shooting but also for movie recording, resulting in comfortable recording. While achieving outstandingly high-resolution images equivalent to that of stills, quieter AF operation is realized with the refined AF drive system. In addition, focus breathing is effectively reduced during focusing and reliable zooming without losing focus is ensured. An easy-to-operate control ring to which a function such as aperture, ISO sensitivity and exposure compensation can be easily assigned has been adopted.
By employing a stepping motor in the AF drive system, even quieter recording is made possible. This enables users to continue recording without worrying about lens drive sound being recorded in the movie. This lens was designed carefully considering operability during movie recording. Focus-breathing reduction function reduces shifting of the angle of view when adjusting focus, allowing users to freely change focus after setting a composition. Additionally, enhanced AF tracking performance enables users to zoom in and out without worrying about losing focus on the subject. Thanks to these features, users can concentrate on recording.
The control ring that is common to all NIKKOR Z lenses is separate from the focus ring. A function selected from various options such as aperture, ISO sensitivity and exposure compensation can be assigned to ensure smooth setting changes for natural movie recording.
OUTSTANDING MOBILITY AND RELIABILITY
Despite being a telephoto zoom lens with a fixed f/2.8 maximum aperture attaining high image quality, a lightweight body is achieved that provides outstanding portability when combined with the Z series camera. Also, with its robustness, realized by employing parts made of magnesium alloy for the lens barrel, durability and dust-/drip-resistant performance, photographers can concentrate on shooting in any situation with full security.
CAREFULLY DESIGNED BODY CONSIDERING DUST- AND DRIP-RESISTANT PERFORMANCE
Various sections including movable parts are sealed to achieve dust- and drip-resistant capability. Fluorine coat that repels dust or dirt for easy removal even if it adheres to the lens surface is applied to the front lens element.
VARIETY OF FEATURES AND FUNCTIONS THAT SUPPORT HIGH OPERABILITY
The lens information panel enables quick confirmation of aperture, focus distance, depth of field, etc. without looking into the viewfinder even in dark situations. Two lens Fn buttons are employed to which a wide variety of functions equivalent to those of the Fn1/Fn2 buttons on the camera body can be assigned. By facilitating the effective use of functions, shooting flexibility is greatly expanded.
